Matty Matheson, a vibrant and charismatic figure, has gained widespread recognition as both an actor and a chef. Yet, his culinary journey began long before his television fame.
Starting in Toronto’s French kitchens in the early 2000s, Matheson gradually build up his reputation and expertise in the culinary world. He played a key role in opening the hip restaurant Parts & Labour, where he served as executive chef until its closure.
During the filming of The Bear, Chicago has become like a second home to him. In the show, Matheson portrays the cheerful and helpful Neil Fak, a character close to his real-life persona but notably not a chef. Besides acting, Matheson also contributes as a producer and culinary consultant for the series.
His favorite spots in Chicago, influenced by his keen sense of taste and adventure, include hidden gems and unique eateries that reflect his dynamic personality.
Lucia’s
Lucia’s is a charming little deli offering home-cooked meals. It’s a cozy spot, known for its incredible sausage on a bun with cheese and peppers.

Bavettes
Bavettes, a vibrant spot located at 218 W. Kinzie St., offers a mouth-watering shellfish tower. It is often ordered with an extra pound of crab, a side of fries, and a green salad.
Aside from their well-known steaks, their roast chicken and mashed potatoes are also highly recommended.
Birrieria Zaragoza
Birrieria Zaragoza on 4852 S. Pulaski Rd. is known for its incredible tortillas and succulent goat dishes. The family-run spot is beloved for its tender cabeza tacos, rumored to be the best in town.
Gene and Jude’s
Gene and Jude’s is iconic for its hot dogs, celebrated for their perfect size and delightful snap.
A classic order includes two dogs topped with mustard, onions, sport peppers, and a generous portion of salty fries. Pairing this with an orange pop completes the experience.

Tufanos
Tufanos serves amazing grilled calamari and delicious sausage and peppers.
Located at 1073 W. Vernon Park Pl., it’s truly the perfect spot.
Bonus: Mr. Beef
If you’re around 666 N. Orleans St., don’t miss out on Mr. Beef, the spot that The Bear drew inspiration from.
Known for its mouthwatering roast-beef sandwiches, it has a special shoutout from Matty Matheson himself.
His autograph on the wall boasts, “MR. BEEF BEST IN THE GALAXY” in his unmistakable all-caps handwriting.
